1. I n what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real medis products ?

The ways in which i was able to portray the similarities in conventions to various other gangster texts,(which i attempted to make as clear as possible), through my tiles and the ways in which they are printed upon the typical gangster conventions of cigarettes, alchol cards, guns and poker chips. All of which connote the gangster genre. I feel that even though i have used these conventions i developed upon this idea with the subtle change in the genre to have the tile printed upon them. I added the special effect of making the film black and white in order to make and fit in with the idea that this film is dark gritty and mysterious. My use of loud and fast paced non diagetic music added to the excitement and helped to build up the Adrenalin for the audience as they sit on the edge of there seat. Within the film snatch there various scenes which are slowed down to emphasise the impact of people being hit or killed so i incorporated this convention within my piece and feel that it worked well. The fact that i started the film with lots of action and excitement is also a typical convention within gangster films as it gets the audiences engaged and excited for the rest of the film.

2 How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

I feel that the social group in which I’m targeting my film towards is the young avid film lovers who regularly visit the cinema to see any old generic American film. As this is the target audience which will usually help a film to make the largest profit. They will more than likely still be in further education with a part time job and find a visit to the cinema a time to relax and escape. They will more than likely be male and possibly bring friends or partners with them as they won’t enjoy the experience by themselves. And I feel that the film itself portrays this with the characters within it and there social backgrounds, in order to connote this I used a hip hop RaB non diagetic sound track which I feel that the particular target audience for the film will enjoy. I also attempted to use some modern styled editing which will appeal and excite the audience. Even though there isn’t any diagetic talking within the opening sequence I feel that through out the rest of the film they will speak in slang which people be able to understand and relate to. I have tried to make it so that the characters aren’t made out to be too stereotypical, but at the same time relatable for the audience.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If i was to sell or pitch my film towards a production company then i would aim to go to the large conglomerate distributors 'Warner brothers pictures' as there a financially successfully production/ distribution company who have made many other successful gangster pictures over the years. From back in 1938 with the ever famous 'Angels with Dirty faces'to the more modern film 'The Departed'. Also they will have enough money to advertise and distribute the film worldwide attracting my target audience through the different types of media in which they use every day, Internet, mobiles, TV and posters. I don't feel; as though i should go to independent film companies such as Film four as they have a bad reputation for when it comes to distributing films as they have to go to big film companies like Warner brothers to distribute them.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product ?

I'm aiming my product at the avid film lovers who could be categorised as being mostly male aged between 15 - 21 who are underachievers whilst at the same time wanting to be aspirers, with there there social values mostly involving being a hedonist in which they enjoy the company of friends. This will be because there more than likely still in education with a part time job, and there at a time where they have a lot of events happening in there life like exams and college/ university choices so in order to escape from these things they go to the cinema with there friends. But this can also be expanded as there many other older gerations of people who will be appealed by the violence and high action.
Through a questionaire towards these audiences i was able to find that the targeted audience for the film were able to sit back and enjoy the film with a clear understandin and enjoyment from the film. But the older people got who watched the film and who i interviewed found the experience too much to bare as they didn't like the fast edditing and use of non diagetic music, and there understanding of the narrative was limited as they felt the need to ask many questions to understand what was going on. My target audience enjoyed becuase there used to this experience and get thrills from these types of picture.

5. How did you attract/ address your audience ?

So In order to attract my audience towards the film i decided to involve and engage the audience within the piece. To do this i decided to make all the titles written upon objects making the audience actually look out for the titles rather than having it put straight in front of them. I also prolonged the deaths of each character so the audience are able to enhance the death in more detail. one thing which i liked because i felt it created a great atmosphere was the fact that i changed the film to be black and white, but a lot of people who im targeting the film at are quite put off at by the fact that a film is in black and white.

From these comments i was able to make the conclusion that i was able to attract the right target audience for my piece as there language is slang with text talk.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product ?

All of my filming was done wth the aid of a mini- DV digital SLR camera in which we did all of our filming straight onto a mini tape. Even though we didn't have high tec equipment we were still able to perform various proffesional tecqniques with zooming in and out changing the focus of the camera or it's depth of field. Once we had completed filming we were able to manipulate our images through hooking the camera up to a computer and capturing the filming from the tape and into a program called premier pro (this was the first time i had used a video manipulating software like this). through the use of this program i was able to eddit the scenes i had captured and construct them into a film which flowed and had concistant transitions between scenes. through the process of adding various visual effects i changed the film from being in colour to black and white in order to give it an urban feel. i was also able to costruct fade ins and outs at both the beggining and end of the film. I also incorporated a sound track which i felt enfasise the theme. One of the things which i learnt and i feel will be extremely usefull in the future was how to upload a clip onto youtube and then transfering that onto my blog. I had some problems with the technology as i created a voice recording of me giving a commentarie of the film and reviews from my target audience onto my mobile phone but had trouble with uploading it onto my blog and run out of time.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product ?

I learnt a lot from the preliminary task which if i hadn't learnt wouldn't have made the film flow concistantly as i wouldn't have been able to use match on action and continuity edditing. It also let me get used to the equipment. I was able to realise that i should film the same scene from different angles as your able to develop different feelings and atmospheres. The pre planning work helped massively with my new project as i new all of things which i needed to go looking for really quick and was able to work with a timed plan really well as i kept to it and got all my filming and edditing done in time. The understanding of the 180 degre rule helped with the fluidity of the film as well. But i have also learnt a lot from this new project which i can then develop upon in the future if i ever do a new project.

I met the deadline and all i need to do is wright my evaluation

I have one week left before our deadline, i have made some alterations to the film by changing it to black and white and adding in a title for the film. I was able to do this with the aid of a computer programe called Adobie premiere Pro

I have returned back from half term in which i completed the filming process, all went to plan as everyone turned up on time and i don't think i will need to re- shoot any of my scenes. The only issue which occurred was that the battery ran out on the camera half way through filming, so we had to wait whilst that re charged. Now back at college I'm able to use the software on the computers to begin editing my 2 min sequence.

We will begin filming on Monday 16th at around 10 oclock at my house.

Nearly all of my filming will be shot internally apart from the very first 5 seconds, other than that it's all shot within my garage. To make the film more enjoyable and to look professional and to run smoothly, i will be incorporating different forms of match on action and shot reverse shot through out the scenes. There will be little dialog in my opening sequence as there will be a strong non diagetic piece of music being played over the top of the sequence. All of which i will be attempting to fit into 2 minutes of film.

Video - film Openings : Analysis of the beggining of 'Snatch'

I have decided to work within the genre of a 'gangster film' for my project. I decided that a film which would help me to understand this genre even more through more thorough research is 'Snatch'. The Producers of this film are 'Columbia Pictures Corporation' and 'SKA Films', the distributers of the film are 'Sony Pictures Entertainment' and 'Columbia TriStar Films', If i was looking to get help from a production company then i would attempt to get a British company like film four rather than a big American conglomerate, as this would give me more creativity but at the same time the film might make a big loss in profit. I would guess that the film is aimed at a young adult either at college/ university or a working class audience who are probably quite rebellious/ aspirational. This film follows many of the typical gangster genred features that appeared in the first two minuets of the opening sequence, which are, guns, gangsters under cover, diamonds/ money and getaway drivers. Some of which i will be attempting to have within my own film. Narrativley i found that it was about a group of gangsters who are under cover as Jewish rabbies, in order to steal the worlds biggest diamond from a Jewish bank. I will probably use a similar story line within my film involving something to do with a gangster reclaiming some money that was taken from him. I liked the idea that they were under cover/dressed up but i don't really have enough time and a big enough budget in order to splash out on costumes for numerous people. Usually you would asociate Gangster films with dim lighting a smokey rooms, where as this scene was shot within the day with lots of light, i will attempt to use dim lighting within my sequence as i'm shooting it within my garage. After the analysis of the scene i was surprised at how much footage there is within two minuets but this is down to continuity editing making the film seem to run a lot more smoothly, whether this be through the use of shot reverse shot or match on action. The next thing that i will do is the planning for my film (storyboards, time table of events and script) all of which i will attempt to complete within a week.

Video - film Openings : research into the genre gangster and it's audience

After doing some initial research into the various genres available for me to choose from i decided to work within the gangster genre. Some more famous gangster films are 'Scar Face', 'Angels with Dirty Faces' and 'The departed' all of which contain some generic formulas which remain consistent through out all of these films, this includes things like the main villain (who the camera follows around through out the whole film), is usually attempting to follow the 'American dream'. You will also usually find that the main character is from a poor immigrant family causing them to search for wealth, power and respect. This allows the audience to follow the character as they rise and fall in there pursuit. You will also usually find that the power of the main character ends up corrupting and destroying them. A lot of the props used within these films involve dark nightclubs or streets with neon signs, fast cars, piles of cash, sleazy bars, poor living quarters or rooming houses. Even though we know the character is doomed to failure and possible death we feel attached to them and feel that there being portraid as a victim. These films are usually produced by big production companies like universal studios and Warner bros giving them big budgets for large gun fights and big gun chases within big cities, with a big and well known cast.

My target audience in which I'm aiming my film at is young adults aged between 18 - 21 and more than likely male. Demographically i would feel that there occupations would be C2 as they would probably still be at college and university as well as having a part time job. Also photographically they would be more rebelish whilst at the same time being quite aspirational because of the fact that there still in education. To asses my audience in more detail i would say that they live in accommodated flats on site at there university's, they quite often visit the cinema in there spare time or just stay at home watching films or crime dramas on TV like CSI. I think they would enjoy listening to more rock music whilst at the same time they enjoy a bit of rap a RaB. i think that they would be spending most of there money upon the latest fashionable clothes leaving them with little money to spend on foosd causing them to shop at lidl, but at the same time there quite well educated as they are at university but at the same time there rebelious in the way in which they go out at weekends to cocerts and clubs.

Video - film Openings : Narrative and Genre

In order to make the research into film openings more thorough i analysed and studied the beginning to the film 'Dog Soldiers'. From it i learnt how even from the first 2 minutes your able to tell a lot from the narrative and what conventions we should be expecting through out the rest of the film. But i learned from the bit that i watched that the film belongs to the horror/action genre Hollywood film in which it's sub divided into a werewolf category of horror. From this genre we immediately have various expectations of what conventions we should be seeing through out the film e.g Blood, death, violence, hidden villain, guns and explosions. We have also established the Proppian narrative of characters for example, the main character will aim to protect his troops from any dangers they face in order for them to survive. One of the villains will probably have to rely upon the main character for help. The other villains will attempt to disrupt the situation, and the donar is the girl friend who presents the dangling cause of the film in the form of a silver knife.

With the help of this research i will be able to use these conventions to create a narrative and as well as structures within my own gangster film.

Video - Film Openings: Initial research, Institution

You will more than likely find that within a large main stream genre film that you will find there produced and distributed by a large corporate company like 'Universal Studios' and 'Warner brothers Studio'. These companies are usually multinational in there distribution, and the films involve a generic narrative with a large budget and well known and highly paid stars.

On the other hand we have Social realist films which are on the other end of the spectrum, meaning they usually consist of a low budget with a less well known cast and production/ distribution company. The narrative structure of these films is less formulaic and is usually about more serious and relatable issues around a certain period of time. These films attract a smaller audience but can still make it's money back, usually from DVD sales.

Then there's art house films which again have little input by large production and distribution company with tiny budgets and new actors.The films narratives are usually unique and personal, causing them to attract a less main streamed audience, and more of a upper middle class and news paper reviewer audience. This usually leads to a loss of money and in worse case scenario companies have to shut down due to less demand of more art house films.

An audience usually makes there choices of what film they wish to see depending upon the films Production/ distribution company, as they have expectations of what that company and genre of film will have.

Video - Film Openings: Initial research

I have decided to go with the video task rather than print, this will involve me creating a 2 minute opening sequence to a film of my choice. I have decided to do a film within the genre of a Gangster film targeted at a main stream audience and possibly are well known production and distribution company.

In order to find out what forms and narrative i should use within my own video production, i did some research into the main classed films such as Hollywood films, Social Realist films and Art House films. This way i will find out the typical generic conventions within the films and the key conventions tied within them.

The main generic and multi national films are usually classed as Hollywood films, So through the research of gangster films (like 'Scar Face','Angels with Dirty Faces'and 'The Departed') i found that there conventions and narrative structures all very similar. They usually have a storyline where the main character of the film begins life off in the slums of a major city and dreams of one day being respected by all, but to do so they delve into the realm of imprisonment and the dealing of drugs and stolen goods. They usually consist of guns, robbery's, dealing in things they shouldn't, death and respect.

Social realist films however are aimed at a working classed audience meaning there narratives are structured in order for the audience to be able to relate to the issues, making there subject matter more detailed and complexed, with a not so happy ending. So Films like 'Burning an Illusion','This is England' and 'The Full Monty' all consist of characters from a slum area of a main city, who are attempting to cope through issues like Relationships, politics, unemployment and racism.

Art house films are similar to social realist in there complex and detailed narrative, but within an Art house film there usually more personal with difficult subject matter, This attracts a more sophisticated and middle classed audience. So when researching into films like 'Inland Empire', 'Funny Ha Ha' and 'Morvern Callar'
that they usually have a narrative in which your following a character on a journey, either through there life or through a situation in which they need to overcome. These conventions seem to attract a more middle classed audience

New video Project

I am still slightly undecided as what to choose but I'm pretty confident that i will go with the video production task, i chose this task over the magazine one because you have to be interested in music, (Which i am not) and there's allot of written work involved which I'm not that good at. I feel more confident when I'm drawing our doing something practical, so film sounds like the ideal choice as you have to do storyboards and set designs as well as filming. I also love films.

Evaluation

We used the typical media conventions in which you see within television programs and films within our own film pieces e.g the use of the 180 degree rule and match on action. Without the use of these camera movements and editing our films will look armature and will only confuse and disorientate them. It could be said that our media piece represents a teenage social group as we talk about the different subjects which are most important within our lives(football). It's for this reason that i believe our piece would be targeted at a young teenage audience like skins, so to attract my audience i would continue to talk about the sort of issues which arise within the lives of the youth today. I feel as though i have learnt a lot on the technical side when it comes to editing as it was a whole new experience so it was good to learn how to to shorten and lengthen clips as well as being able to find out how to change the volume controls. I also learnt how to for the first time import a video file from YOUTUBE on to a blog. Overall i feel i didn't realise how much paper work and permission you needed before you even begin doing any filming. Overall i feel that our film piece was successful in completing the objectives of the media conventions and were very pleased with the final product.

Editting

With the use of a computer program we were able to manipulate our footage which we had filmed in order to extend or crop a clip. We first of all had to capture the images from the camcorder which was connected to the computer in order to edit them. Then we set the clips in to the correct order as the script.

Filming

Before we could even start filming our story we had to find our location and ask for permission to use the area to film, it's then after that we had to do a concept plan of our location which would give us an in site into where the cameras would be, and where the 180 degree and match on action rules would be taking place. We then decided between the three of us who would be doing the acting and who would be working the camera. When actualy doing the filming we realised that some of our original layout plans wouldn't actualy work within the scene, so we had to make some alterations. We also had to add in the scene where we cut to someone scoring a goal but due to time restrictions we actualy had to just film kicking a football.

Evaluation

I feel that through our detailed research and analysis of various existing student magazines we were able to get an accomplished understanding of layout and contents for the cover and contents page; with this research we incorporated these ideas into our magazine. This is evidential through our stylized yet simple mast head and our strap lines which were suitable and relatable to our audience.
Our cover consisted of a mid close up of a student at the college, in which we touched up the image on a computer where we removed a lamppost within the background as well as removing one of her ears and in its place we air brushed in some more hair.
With the use of the computer program “Adobe Photoshop” we were able to make vast alterations to all parts of the image, but you have to find a point at which you are unable to make any more changes as it begins to look too artificial rather than natural. It was because of this reason that we made as few alterations as possible, and in the end I feel we came out with a well worked image.
Overall i feel we achieved the task sucessfully as we created a cover and contents page for a target audience which worked well and would definately appeal towards them.

180 degre rule and match on action.

180 degre rule.

• It's the rule in which there is an imaginary line crossing over the characters within a scene in which the camera isn't allowed to cross, but it can pan around in that 180 degre area, because otherwise the audience becomes disorientated as characters begin to switch between sides of the screen.Match on action

• This is when someone films a person opening a door from one angle and then changes the angle through a cut, but in doing so they need to carry on filming from the exact angle in which the door was opened at in the previous shot, otherwise you get a jump cut and the scene doesn't run as smoothly.

Evaluation

I feel that both the cover and contents page for our magazine are similar to those in which we have studied. The reasons for why i believe this is because it consists of a mid close up image of a student at the college.

Once we transfered the photo onto the computer we began touching up the image. This is when we covered up one of her ears with hair and removed a lampost in the background.

What my Magazine will Consist of.

I will firstly try to give the magazine cover a catchy and luring masthead in which it will explain what the magazines contents are whilst at the same time being short and snappy. I will also have both a screamer and a direct mode of address luring the reader in order to relate to the magazine, whilst at the same time telling them the sort of things in which the magazine contains. These sort of things will also be included into the strap line and the coverlines. As for the image on the cover, I will be looking for an photo of a student and if possible have them stand in front of the college in order to show a relation between the two.

- The psychographics of our reader would be that they are Achievers, because they're the sort of people who aim to do well and earn lots of money when there older.

- Our readers social values would either be a Hedonist, or a Post-modernist as they would like to enjoy life as much as possible right now.

- On the Jicnars scale we would rate our reader as being semi and unskilled manual workers as they are probably only working part time.

- The age range of our reader is going to be between 13 - 18 year old and aimed at both a male and female audience.

Magazine Analysis

I looked at various magazines aimed at students and what they all had on offer for there audience. A lot of magazines offer there readers various ways in which they can stay safe whilst at the same time enjoying there time at college. They also like to keep there audiences up to date with the latest technology and film/ album charts. They more than often give there readers valuable information on available causes in which they might take in the near future, and what they're going to provide them for careers later on. I also noticed that the covers of student magazines would either have an image of the college where the magazines from, or of people who actually attend the school.
